The Function Of A Fireplace Grate

What is the function of a fireplace grate, the main function of a fireplace grate is to generally elevate the logs that are burning in the firebox to create a good airflow. What is the purpose of airflow? Airflow will increase the efficiency of the fire and if you want a really good heat especially during cold nights, then you better have a fireplace grate. With the logs elevated, the air is therefore allowed to be drawn coming under the logs and it force the coal to burn really hot. The hotter it burns, the better the air it draws and if they logs are not perfectly elevated, they just sit on the floor doing nothing.
